Day 31 - Maputo, Mozambique

Date:  Feb 8, 2007

Location:  Maputo, Mozambique

Next Port:  Mombassa, Kenya, Feb. 12

Quick Summary:  We arrived a bit late today in Maputo. A good portion of the passengers went off on a 10-hour trek to the famous Kruger Game Preserve back in South Africa. Karen and Larry decided to enjoy a down day…taking the shuttle bus into Maputo, doing laundry, playing cards and working on the journal and photos.

Report:  Capt. Dag was somewhat upset this a.m. He arrived as scheduled at the offshore pilot station at 5:00 a.m., but there was no pilot boat. So instead of docking at 7:00 a.m., it was after 9:15 before the tour buses took off for the long trek to and from the Kruger Game Preserve back in South Africa.

We walked for 45-min. on the deck, had a quick breakfast and caught a shuttle bus into Maputo at about 11:15 a.m. There is not too much to see in the downtown of this very poor country. It has not fared too well since independence in 1975, many of the buildings are run down and unemployment runs from 60-80%. Luckily, our “shuttle” turned into a mini-tour, stopping at two places for photos and a 15-min. walk through the main market. So, in an hour we saw all we really needed to see in the heat and were more than ready to head back to the ship.

We played some cards in the afternoon. Larry worked on the journal, photos and uploaded several days worth of photos to the web. Karen attended a stretch class.

We joined Nancy and Jerry in the Observation Lounge and then moved on with them for dinner in Compass Rose. Showtime tonight featured concert pianist Linda Ang presenting “From West End to Waltz Time.” She was terrific.

Now we have three sea days before we reach Mombassa, Kenya.
