Days 32-34 - At Sea

Date:  Feb 9-11, 2007

Location:  At Sea

Next Port:  Mombassa, Kenya, Feb. 12

Quick Summary:  For three days we have been at sea. Friday we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn, Saturday we were in the Mozambique Channel and Sunday we cruised off the coast of Tanzania. The first two days we sunny and very calm. Sunday broke cloudy with white caps but became hazy bright as the day progressed. We have been fighting the normal currents so may arrive in Mombassa a bit late.

Report:  We have thoroughly enjoyed shipboard life the past three days. (Some of our “Type A” friends may find that hard to do.) But we have enjoyed the sun, books, cards, Scrabble, workouts in the gym, long walks on the upper deck, lectures, the entertainers and conversations and meals with good friends.

We also have had meaningful discussions with our daily morning devotionals group. Today, Jamie led an inspirational interdenominational Protestant church service that was attended by about 40 worshippers.

Garrick Utley presented two lectures, one titled “Portraits of Power! Leaders Who Change our World,” and the other, “Living and Prospering in a Global War.”  We also enjoyed two presentations by Luca Belpietro discussing the Maasai Tribe of Kenya and the challenges to preserve their cultural heritage.  Luca manages the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust in central Kenya and had many stories to share. Both speakers gave us much to think about.

Tomorrow is a greatly anticipated for all guests. Regent is providing the World Cruisers with one of two complimentary shore events. We have chosen to visit the Amboseli Game Preserve, dominated by Mt. Kilimanjaro. We have been told that the mountain is not guaranteed to be “out,” something we are well aware of having lived several years in Seattle where it was a great day when the mountains were “out!” The trip will involve a one-hour flight on small charter aircraft to the preserve, a two-hour game drive and lunch at a hotel in the park. We will then return via air to the ship. We hope to have some time to explore Mombasa upon our return. It should be a full fun day.

We shall see how the late arrival impacts the logistics of all this, but we are looking forward to the chance to see numerous wild animals and maybe even catch a glimpse of Kilimanjaro.

Oh, yes, we advanced our clocks 30 min. on two of the seadays and are now 9 hours ahead of (cold) Chicago time…plus enjoying 85 degree temps.
